Florida is well known for the many palms in its landscapes and natural areas. Liter- ally hundreds of palm species have been grown for many years in Florida. In a 1930s paper1, David Fairchild described over 300 palm species in the collection of his friend and neighbor Colonel Robert Montgomery. Although hundreds of palm species are grown in Florida, only 12 species are native to the state.
